Historic Brattonsville is an open-air living history museum comprised of over forty historic structures on 800 acres in south central York County. Since 1959, York County has worked to preserve and present the history of the Carolina Piedmont as portrayed through the structures, landscapes, and stories of the Brattonsville community. Today, we strive to interpret this cultural landscape’s enduring relationship with agriculture and the struggles its residents undertook to ensure their civil liberties from the American Revolution through Reconstruction.
To better attain that goal, we are excited to initiate the Restoring Brattonsville project after years of planning and preparation. This multi-year project will see the historic houses of the Brattons and the enslaved restored to their periods of significance with the overarching intention
to have visitors experience this cultural landscape as it was in 1855. In order to carry out such an amazing effort, we have collaborated with some of the nation’s foremost experts in architecture, engineering, and preservation. We have conducted in-depth archival and architectural research to inform our restoration efforts, like the re-establishment of historic fence lines based on historic artwork, re-painting fauxgrained woodwork following scientific paint analysis, and reconstructing porticos informed by family manuscripts and photographs. Over the next two years, you will see a transformation at Brattonsville unlike anything seen in the Carolina Piedmont since the Bicentennial of the United States.
